The 2016 Houston Can Academies Cares for Kids Golf Classic is being held Wednesday, October 26th at Wildcat Golf Club with a shotgun start at noon. Tournament proceeds benefit the three Houston Can Academies high schools and comes at a time when the importance of education has been pushed to the forefront of our community’s agenda.

Tournament registration fees are $300 per individual or $1,000 for a foursome and include lunch, a golf cart, 18 holes of golf, refreshments on the course and dinner. Following the tournament, there will be an awards ceremony and recognition dinner. Other sponsorships are available.

This year Texans Can Academies graduated nearly 1,900 students in their 11 schools across the state.  It is crucial that there is a choice for students who may have struggled in a traditional high school setting, or simply just fallen behind in their grade level because of life’s circumstances.  A lot of students simply need more individualized attention to learn.  Houston Can gives students that opportunity. Struggling students, who may have no other choice than to drop out of school, however still want to receive an education and earn a degree, need a high school option that will work with their schedule so that they can continue their education.

The proceeds from the tournament help students in and out of the classroom like recent Houston graduate, Jennifer Jimenez.  Jennifer graduated and walked across the stage to receive her diploma after many struggles threatened to hold her back. She is a cancer survivor and presently in remission. After dropping out of a traditional high school three times she enrolled with Houston Can Academy.

Jennifer wanted to finish her high school education but needed a school that could work with her schedule and specific needs. At times she walked to school pushing a baby stroller so she could earn the degree she dreamed about. Jennifer graduated in June and plans on studying criminal justice when she enters college in the fall.

Houston Can Academies are free, open enrollment dropout recovery high schools that welcome all students ages 14-21 who have struggled in a traditional high school setting.  Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the student programs of three Houston Can Academy campuses.
