SUGAR LAND, TX – Suzanne Whatley, long time Sugar Land resident, is pleased to announce her decision to seek election as Sugar Land City Council Member District 1 in the May 1, 2021 election.

“While I feel committed to Represent District One as your next Council Member, the decision to run for this position was not taken lightly or in haste.  I have seriously considered this position for over six years and over this time, I felt moved to purposefully learn, gain experience, and familiarize myself with the functions of our city government, the role of City Council, the needs and concerns of the citizens and the value of involvement within the community” said Whatley.

Suzanne Whatley is a 24-year resident of Sugar Land in Fort Bend County.  Since coming to Sugar Land, she has focused on building her business, volunteering in the community, and raising her family. Whatley owns Branding Matters, a custom decorated wearables company, which began in her garage and has grown to its current location in the Historic Sugar Land area in District One.

She currently serves as a City of Sugar Land Planning and Zoning Commissioner.  She has participated in Excellence for Leadership in Non-Profits, Sugar Land 101, Sugar Land Citizen’s Police Academy, Sugar Land Citizen’s Fire Academy and Fort Bend Leadership Forum. She also serves in many positions including a board member on Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse and The Curtis Brown Foundation, President of the Sugar Land Citizens Fire Academy, and actively volunteering for Meals on Wheels and Mamie George Catholic Charities.  She is an active member in Sugar Land Rotary and Sugar Land Exchange Club.  And, in 2019 was honored as City of Sugar Land’s Volunteer of the Year – Fire Department.

She has volunteered, along with her husband Brad, in church and school activities supporting her family including many years of involvement in the Sugar Land Girls’ Softball Association.  

“It is my priority to serve the citizens of District 1 and the City of Sugar Land with integrity and a commitment to consider my actions for the benefit of all citizens of Sugar Land,” said Whatley.

Suzanne graduated from the El Campo High School and attended Incarnate Word College where she studied architecture and art.  She has been married to her husband Brad for 28 years.  They have five children and six grandchildren.  Suzanne is a member of River Pointe Church.
